Spotting common online scams

Warning signs to check before you pay, click or share a password.

Draft guide from the UniteOZ team, not yet reviewed by a named author.

  1. Be wary of urgency

Messages that demand payment or action right now are a common warning sign.

  2. Check the sender, not the name

Look at the actual email address or phone number. Official bodies will not ask for passwords.

  3. Do not click links to log in

Go to the organisation's site by typing the address yourself, or call a number you already trust.

  4. Confirm unusual invoices

If a supplier asks you to change bank details, phone them on a known number first.

  5. Report it

If you think you have been scammed, contact your bank straight away and report it to Scamwatch.
